JIF has provided dozens of points of light, composed of column and lantern “Lisbonense”, who brought a new charm to the garden Afonso de Albuquerque, in front of the Belém Palace, official residence of the President of the Republic of Portugal.

Afonso de Albuquerque was a military gentleman, second Governor of the Portuguese India, whose military and political actions were essential to the establishment of the Portuguese Empire in the Indian Ocean.

JIF provided consoles and lamps that light up the main arteries of the Moorish Quarter, one of the most traditional of Lisbon, where emerged the first productions of Mudejar art, which preceded the appearance of the Manueline style.

The sadness and melancholy of his songs gave the Fado. On Capelão Street was born Maria Severa Onofriana, first Portuguese fado singer and maximum expression of the time. Other greats Fado singers, as Fernando Maurício and Mariza, were also born in this typical Lisbon neighborhood.

The Moorish neighborhood

JIF has provided the points of light that returned to traditional lighting in what must be the site of Lisbon most representative of historical facts. Surrounding the Equestrian Statue of King Joseph I, the points of light were placed by us in partnership with CML, within its idea of maintaining and restoring this important Lisbon’s historical and cultural legacy.

The lighting in this iconic city square, started in 1780, with the oil lamps, a tenuous and expensive light, where every day, when the moon did not attenuate the darkness, the lighters, at nightfall and sunrise, climbed the ladder to light and delete it; a circumstance that continued over the years and followed the various types of fuel, such as “smelling bad” whale oil, oil and gas, until the arrival of electric lighting in 1889.
